All Eyes on Salem Street : 04/26/2009 |
| New Beginnings Outreach (NBO) trains, educates, and develops the leadership of people beset with poverty. Clients of NBO are trained to turn ruined neighborhoods into thriving communities. Social equality, environmental sustainability, and resource growth are three primary ideals that overlap to define the organizational path of NBO |
Our eyes are now locked on a special property on Salem Street. This house that was once condemned, is now on the path to becoming a fully functional transitional house for our clients. With over 1900 sq ft, the house is a tremendous asset to the NBOCDC community. The clients benefit from temporary housing plans while participating in NBO Training. Excelnamics Inc. donated the house on 407 Salem St. Durham, NC to NBO in April of 2008. The house was built in 1913 and as a historical home has been a prominent fixture in the surrounding community. The property was previously used as a boarding house, but has since fallen into disrepair. |

New training courses will be available to clients soon. Using recycled wood, clients will construct solar hot water heating panels at the job skills campus. After their construction, panels will be ready for installation in the community. |

Ready for Business Outside of the Box: 02/28/2009 |
| |
A new economic niche is created as NBO clients have recently initiated a wood carving business. Clients run a responsible operation by collecting recycled wood and applying their woodworking skills recently acquired through NBO. These carpenters are now constructing imaginative products including wooden signs, three-dimensional sculptures, furniture, cutting boards, and jewelery boxes. These entrepreneurs are only scratching the surface of their creativity. |
